Youth Planning Final Folder

Foundation Preparation 3:

Editing:

This was reasonably easygoing, compared to the sound side. Simply put, each of the shots had the exact same filters on them: brightness, blur and gamma. The gamma levels were identical in every shot, while the blur and brightness varied depending on the lengths of each shot, in order to fade them in and out appropriately. Shots were cut at specific points to increase tension, the ending being a perfect example. The only other noteworthy point was that the font was one we downloaded especially for our titles and credits, the font was called Angel and was downloaded at dafont.com

This is really about it, in the way of editing. Next up, my full and personal evaluation of the film.

Foundation Preparation 2:

Here is a list of the primary components of our film, explored in detail:

Music:
This, to me personally, was the most important field; some (even in my group) may argue with me on this. Especially after seeing how meticulous I was with general film editing, but they didn't see me working on sound behind the scenes ;)
For the loop to be used in the background of the film, I sourced some creepy stock atmospherics from drumnbass.be and dnbwiki.com, and some from the video game F.E.A.R, available to all visitors of one of their many fansites around a year ago (and I, making music, have been scouring for samples for a long time). I loaded each of these files into Logic8 and got a general feel for sequencing, volume control, fading in and out, and transition. I then exported each track individually, loaded them in Recycle to save them as Reason 4 friendly files, and loaded them in Reason 4 having done so. Once I had done this, I used a variety of filter and phaser effects to give the sound more life. The final product is continually audible throughout the film. This process was mirrored with different samples for the sound effect heard underlaying the shot of 'The Youth' watch Alex, Tom and Nikki from afar. The only sound effect that was different at all was the one used at the very end, the baseball bat swing. For this sound effect, I used a combination bass kicks and percussion for the impact sound, a sine wave for the initial swing before the impact and a pitch bend on a synth for the fade. Apart from the sine, I used ADSR to attain the perfect balance of impact and fade (A-Attack, D-Decay, S-Sustain, R-Release, all components of an Amp Envelope).

Foundation preparation:

Well, here's the general lowdown for our foundation film, 'The Youth'. I'm aware this post is incredibly late in the day, and for that my sincerest apologies, but I'll try to do the right thing by making it as easily digestible, information wise, as possible. And on that note, this being the first of a number of posts regarding the film, will explain the film in the most black and white way possible, so that you know exactly the film we are aiming to make:

'Youth' - Synopsis

Based on a true story. In 1998 a group of ill-fated teens were camping in a tyrannized woodland and were never seen again. Lifelong friends Alex Jones, Tom Harris and Nikki Smith were celebrating their last night together before going to university. Alex, 18, has been longing after Nikki, secretly, for years. Nikki, unfortunately is in a long term relationship and Alex has to put on a façade, for the sake of their friendship. Tom, the cynic, is Alex's best friend. When they unwittingly stumble upon another group of teens, Alex feels obliged to protect Nikki, while Tom refuses to submit to the Youth's reign; the Youth that are hunting them down, like lambs to the slaughter.

The 'Youth' are a gang like no other.
